I happened to be listening to a radio programme the other day and the subject of nicknames arose. The discussion was whether these were necessary or even in some cases, kind. It got me thinking back to my policing days where, certainly early on, if a colleague didn't have a nickname it was almost taken that they hadn't quite fitted in as just about everybody bore a soubriquet of some description. The rules were that nicknames should be clever, sometimes funny but never unkind, although to gently dig at a trait or habit was fair game.
