A London fire far deadlier than 1666

When was the great fire of London? You’re probably thinking it was 1666 and it started in a bakery. There were only six officially recorded deaths though it’s likely there were many others unrecorded. Yet, long before the infamous flames of 1666, another fire ravaged London with even deadlier consequences. On this day in 1212, a blaze erupted in Southwark that swept across the Thames, consuming homes, churches, and lives in what may have been the deadliest fire in British history.
