Why today's date could mark the creation of the world

October 23 is a very special date for many people. For fundamentalist evangelical Christians it marks the creation of the world in 4004BC. Some say it happened at 10:am others that it started at 6pm on the evening of October 22. The date was first calculated by James Ussher, the 17th-century Irish archbishop whose name is forever linked to one of the most ambitious chronological undertakings in Western thought. Born in Dublin in 1581, Ussher was a prodigious scholar from an early age, entering Trinity College at just thirteen and later rising to become Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. His life was steeped in theological study, ecclesiastical leadership, and a relentless pursuit of historical truth as he saw it, through the lens of Scripture.
