Last week the list of allowances paid to councillors in Brighton and Hove was published. The total claimed by the 54 councillors was £1,009,628. All councillors received a basic allowance of £14,139. Some councillors receive further allowances for special responsibilities. Inevitably, and quite correctly, it was the leader of the council, Bella Sankey, who received the largest payment, a total of £50,862, followed by the two deputy leaders, Jacob Taylor (£31,172) and Gill Williams (£30,783). Included in these three payments are special responsibility payments of £35,975 for Cllr Sankey and £16,996 for councillors Taylor and Williams.
