Comedy for the Clock Tower is taking place at The Forge Comedy Club on Tuesday the 23rd September. Proceeds from the event are going to the Clock Tower Sanctuary which supports youth homelessness. Suzi Ruffell, an award winning comedian who has repeatedly sold out shows at Edinburgh Fringe, is hosting the event. Lorna, Fundraising Officer for the Clock Tower Sanctuary, has described Ruffell as a “huge advocate to our cause”. The other comedians include Stephen Grant, Dinesh Nathan, Fab Goualin and Jen Brister. At next week’s event, Lorna said there will be “a raffle with prizes donated from supportive local businesses such as Soctopus, i360 and The Permit Rooms” and to expect “lots of laughs”. Lorna has said: “last year we raised over four thousand pounds from our comedy night plus raffle money”. The event is “the perfect chance to have a fun night out and take action for young people who are homeless in Brighton and Hove”. Chris Hough, Fundraising and Communications Manager for the Clock Tower, said: “the Clock Tower is the only day centre in Brighton & Hove for young people experiencing homelessness between the ages of 16 to 25”. Hough has told The Argus that “with the challenges of the welfare system and the cost-of-living crisis, young people are facing the perfect storm. They struggle to access the help they need because the system is too complex, unwelcoming and often unavailable in ways that work for them”. A young person who was a service user said “Without (Clock Tower Sanctuary I have no idea where I would’ve ended up” and was “given lots of things to help me keep my job while sleeping rough with little money”. A testament to their success, the young person is “currently no longer homeless and working full time”. On what the wider community can do to better meet the needs of Brighton’s homeless population, Lorna said: “treating everyone with kindness and understanding”. She continued, saying: “A trauma informed approach, without judgement, is what makes the most difference in whether someone’s experience of homelessness is brief and the impact it has on their life”. When asked about wider scale help, Lorna referenced “universal credit that incentivises working for those in supported accommodation, more housing, lower rents and improved access to mental health” need to be achieved. Hough said on behalf of all at the Clock Tower Sanctuary: “our vision is a city where all young people have somewhere they can call home”.
