Today is Armistice Day. An annual remembrance of the Armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. At 11am we will gather, together with veterans, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, partner services such as Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue at the War Memorial at the Old Steine to remember and reflect on the sacrifice and bravery of that heroic generation, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Last Sunday we held similar services for Remembrance Day across the city, from Portslade to Rottingdean to pay our respects to the fallen and to recommit to a world where we all seek peace, security and freedom. I am always so touched and moved to see residents come out in their thousands to celebrate our heroes, young and elderly, all races and faiths, standing together to remember our shared purpose, our shared sacrifice and the shared future we want to build for all those communities across the Commonwealth who have given so much in the pursuit of peace.
